Past winners of the Dangote Cement consumer promo have commended the company’s Management for the positive economic and social impact of the promo on their livelihoods and wellbeing.

Some of the winners, who spoke on the impact of the cars and millions of Naira won during the previous seasons, described the promo as a big relief and a crucial palliative that lessened the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic which had then shut down the whole world.

More than 450 consumers had emerged either as instant millionaires or owners of brand new car prices, while others won hundreds of tricycles among other attractive prizes during Season 1 and Season 2 of the consumer promo.

The star winners across Nigeria who were presented with brand new saloon cars or N1million as prizes commended the cement manufacturing giant and its Chairman, Aliko Dangote for transforming their lives for the better.

Some of the excited winners, who were contacted by telephone, recalled how they initially thought it was a dream until they were later presented with their various prizes in the full glare of the public.

They said their winnings had enriched their lives and livelihoods and hailed the sincerity of Dangote Cement in handing over the cars to them.

A winner, Mr. Clement James of Marble Construction, Kaduna State who won a brand new car during the last Dangote Cement promo said the prize has enhanced the profitability of his business.

Stating that the car had assisted his company in marketing Dangote Cement products within and outside Kaduna, he said: “We have been using the car to meet clients’ and customers’ needs in and around the state. This has further increased our customer base and boosted our profitability.”

James pointed out that the car gift showcased Dangote’s interest in human empowerment, adding: “The truth is that the car gift has made people understand that Dangote is not only interested in making profits, but also highly interested in impacting the lives of both customers and consumers of its products.

“Before now, we only hear of how much Dangote contributes to empowerment and we had not experienced it personally. With the Dangote Cement promo, we were able to feel the impact directly. It now boosts the confidence of consumers on the company’s products,” he added.

Another past winner, Emmanuel Boye, Managing Director of Awuley Investment Limited, Abuja said the branded car prize his company won had become a source of advertisement for Dangote Cement and its products as people were now becoming more aware of these quality products.

“The prize has increased customers’ behavior in a positive way. The truth is that many people in our locality now have more confidence in us that we are selling high-quality cement products. The branded car has made customers to believe that we are not selling counterfeit re-bagged products because they have seen something to confirm that we are getting the product directly from the company’s factory. So, our sales volume has greatly improved in the past two years.”

Apart from the car prizes, some other consumers especially those who won star prizes of N1million each during the promo said they used the cash to expand their businesses.

Mr. Nsikan Emmanuel from Calabar, Cross River State who was one of the one million Naira prize winners said: “The Dangote Cement sales promotion was a nice technique that attracted consumers to purchase more of Dangote Cement, and they have thus continued to patronise the product. Dangote is the top cement company in Nigeria that produces quality cement at an affordable price.”

Another winner, Yahaya Isah Abdullahi from Kano State, said he used his cash prize to expand his business, adding that he now not only purchased more bags of cement for sale rather than depend on credit grants from distributors, but now had more capital to run his business, all thanks to Dangote Cement and its promo.

Edet Udeme of Delta State who also won N1million, said he used part of the money to expand his business and another part to purchase a motorcycle for customer contact and product distribution, adding that the motorcycle has enhanced his mobility and enabled him to reach out to more consumers of Dangote Cement products.

“I want to thank Dangote Cement for impacting the lives of consumers through the cement promo. It will be good to see more of such promos in the future,” he said.

Speaking on the promos, Group Chief, Branding and Communications Officer, Dangote Industries Ltd, Mr. Anthony Chiejina explained that the company’s decision to launch the promos for the consumer aligned with its vision and mission to enhance the lives of the people by helping to provide their basic needs.

“This strategy is in tandem with the quality of our exceptional products, in line with our brand promise. The timing of the promo, two years ago, was very strategic, as the world was feeling the pains of the COVID-19 pandemic and the management thought it was good to come to the aid of its loyal customers by rewarding them via the promo.

“When Dangote Cement came out with Bag of Goodies Season 2 themed Spell Dangote and Win a Million Naira promo in 2020, it had one thing in mind, which is to give back to the consumers of the product and impact as many lives as possible.

“Two years after the promo, the company can confidently attest to the fact that it has been able to contribute positively to the lives, wellbeing, and businesses of its consumers. The mega promo, which produced hundreds of winners across the country, assisted in mitigating the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumers and dealers of Dangote Cement,” Chiejina added.

BREAKING: 15 months after, Otedola finally assumes chairmanship of FBN

Published

on

Nigerian billionaire investor Femi Otedola has been appointed chairman of the board of directors of FBN Holdings, owners of the First Bank of Nigeria, exactly 15 months after the news broke in October 2022 that he had become the highest shareholder in the bank, one of the oldest in the country

Reports say Otedola, who was elected Chairman of the board after a meeting of the board of directors held on January 31, 2024, took over from Ahmad Abdullahi who was appointed board chair on the 17th of December 2021.

The business mogul, who divested from his initial business of oil and gas to buy into the power sector, where he now owns the Geregu Power Plant in Kogi State, is assuming the current position just five months after becoming a non-executive director on August 14th, 2023.

In October 2022, after buying heavily int FBN, and amid the controversy of his owning the largest single shares of the nation’s premier banking concern, he had moved to douse the tension that he was about to take over its day to day running.

He had reporters then at the ExecuJet Private terminal in Lagos that his recent acquisition of shares in FBN Holdings was purely an investment decision, adding: “Being the single largest shareholder doesn’t mean I must necessarily hold a position in the bank. I believe in allowing competent people to run institutions in a professional manner and to the benefit of all the stakeholders.

“That is an institution with a world-class corporate governance structure and a strong performing management that creates value and guarantees returns in form of dividends and capital appreciation.”

Stressing that the major focus of any good investor is to see opportunities where others did not, he a argued that he was convinced that FBN Holdings had a bright future, is strong, solid, and would remain a dominant player in the Nigerian financial services sector.

Hear him: “I am simply an investor who saw an opportunity in the financial institution and decided to take advantage of it through the investment I have made. My interest, contrary to speculation, is not to become chairman of the bank or its Holdco. Moreover, I am in semi-retirement.”

Why poor Nigerians can’t eat bread anymore – bakers *Storm Lagos Assembly in protest

Published

on

Premium Bread Makers Association of Nigeria (PBAN), stormed the office of the Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly , Alausa, armed with a protest letter over the rising price of baking materials.

They claimed that high costs of ingredients and multiple taxes had made their business too expensive to run, leading to the astronomical increase in the price of bread and other confectionery, to almost double.

Lamenting the ugly situation that had hit their business with low sales and almost zero profit, they also bemoaned the increases in the price of flour and other ingredients, apart from hikes in the prices of other items such as electricity and cooking gas.

At Obasa’s office on Friday, PBAN, told the Speaker that one million jobs of their members may be lost unless the “unbearable intimidation and harassment by state agencies’’ is stopped.

President Emmanuel Onuorah and General Secretary Emmanuel Onyoh, who led the delegation PBAN to hand a letter to Obasa, pleaded with him to help stop multiple levies from agencies and harassment by the police, while listing other challenges threatening the survival of the bread industry in the state.

These in include: Multiple monitoring of bakeries by ministries, agencies, and parastatals

  • Harassment of delivery van drivers by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs), and Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) officials
  • State agencies repeat motoring done by the officials of the National Agency for Food & Drug Administration (NAFDAC), Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, et cetera.

PBAN named the state agencies to include:

  • Lagos State Ministry of Environment
  • Lagos State Safety Commission
  • Lagos State Ministry of Transport (State Carriage)
  • Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA)
  • Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)
  • Lagos State Fire Service
  • Lagos State Inland Revenue Service (LIRS)
  • Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA)
  • Councils and Local Council Development Associations (LCDAs)
  • Lagos State Signage and Advertising Agency (LASAA)

Levies include

  • Daily ticket toll charged by councils and LCDAs
  • Mid-year rates demanded by councils and LCDAs
  • Police harassment and extortion of money from bread delivery drivers

Impact on business

PBAN said these hassles have reduced operational capacity to below 50 per cent, led to low staff retention, and a drop in employee tax to the government.

“The likely loss of job/business by over 500,000 bread distributors is imminent and this will further affect a lot of living conditions of their families,’’ it stressed.

It urged Obasa “to use your good office to save our businesses from collapse and prevent over one million people in Lagos State under our employment (inclusive of bread distributors) from becoming jobless and being pushed back into already saturated unemployment market.’’

PBAN appealed to the government to, among others,

  • Use one consolidated agency to oversee bread business instead of multiple agencies
  • Tell the police to stop the harassment, intimidation and seizure of the vehicles of bread distributors
  • Make Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) World Bank grant and loans available to bread bakers as employers of labour.
